Spain and Portugal - Chris Stenger Travel and Nature Photography - The rugged coast of northern Spain

Iberian Peninsula

Spain and Portugal have a lot to offer to a photographer. The Iberian Peninsula is vast, and in many places, nature is rugged and relatively unspoiled. In addition, it boasts a rich culture and a history stretching back thousands of years. Yet, I haven’t been to Spain or Portugal very often to photograph. I don’t really know why. Perhaps it is too close and not adventurous enough. Or perhaps I had those gruesome images in the back of my mind of overcrowded Spanish costas and Portuguese beaches populated by sunburnt tourists. That was unjustified, because nature on the Iberian Peninsula is spectacular in many places. The many old cities and beautiful castles are also more than worth a visit.

Photo trips to Spain and Portugal

In recent years, I have therefore made a number of photography trips to Spain and Portugal. Trips of one to two weeks. I visited the rugged Atlantic coast in the north and Andalusia in the south, with its deserts and beautiful historic cities like Granada. I also visited the Algarve, extremely well-known and bursting with tourists during the high season. Unexpectedly quiet, however, outside the tourist season. And last but not least the volcanic islands in the Atlantic: the Canary Islands and the Azores with the laurel cloud forests. In the coming years, I will certainly return to Spain and Portugal to photograph. There is a lot to discover there, and it is so conveniently close.
